Nigel’s blog – Sight Matters

Dear All,

I have headed this email as Sight Matters for many reasons, please see below.

Strong sun light can steal your eyesight without you realising. In some instances, people have lost 30% of their eyesight before they become aware that their eyesight is not as good as it should be. The message: wear sunglasses when out in strong sunlight and avoid looking where the sunlight is backlighting the view.

As many of you will be aware some of our members have lost a large percentage of their eyesight due to the ageing process. There are a large number of gadgets that can make life easier provided by such companies as The Royal National Institute for the Blind. Help and guidance can be obtained from the hospital via individuals called ECLO’s- eye clinic liaison officers and through the sensory team via adult social services. However, they are not always abreast of all the things that may make life easier for the individual with sight loss, if anyone wants to pass things by me then, if I can, I will be more than willing to help.

Some of you may have heard my talk on life with sight loss which takes a slightly more humorous look at issues a blind person sometimes has to overcome. When giving out the facts I would explain that the optic nerve contains 1.2 million nerve fibres and therefor the chances of transplanting an eye was as likely as transplanting a whole head, in fact that was thought to be an easier option!

Well science has moved on and I have attached two links that take matters a lot farther, see below.

Kind regards

Nigel
