Paul Young, our Speaker Finder reports:-
Our talk this week was “The Taunton Stop Line” presented by Martin Farrant.
Martin correctly identified that many club members expected this talk to be about trains, however, it was nothing of the sort!
We heard how the threat of invasion in the early months of the Second World War created the need to construct lines of fortifications designed to slow down any enemy advance should an invasion commence.
The Taunton Stop Line was one of these lines stretching across the southwest of England. They consisted of pill boxes and tank traps as well as the use of natural barriers such rivers and canals.
This week saw our best turn out of the membership, at 25, since we recommenced meetings. Let’s hope that growth continues.
