Our talk today was “Winston Churchill – the early years” presented by our member Phil Evans

Paul Young, our Speaker Finder reports:-
Our booked speaker for this week unfortunately had to pull out at the last minute. However, we were very fortunate that Phil Evans stepped in at very short notice to fill the gap. Phil gave a talk about the young Winston Churchill from his birth until the end of the First World War in 1918. It was clearly the product of a great deal of research as it contained considerable detail as well as enjoyable anecdotes and humour. This talk attracted probably our best gathering of members for some time with 27 in attendance.
The AGM:-
Following Phil’s talk we held the Annual General Meeting, presented by our current Chairman Roy Matthews.
The Treasurer Charles Easterbrook gave his report after which the meeting agreed to raise the weekly sub from £4 to £5 and to discontinue the weekly raffle.
Our Programme Secretary Paul Young outlined the problem of finding sufficient Speakers and urged current members to suggest possible ideas including using their own life experiences. Paul said that rather than sticking to the usual 45 minute presentation several members could gang together to present shorter talks, e.g. three 15 minute talks per meeting.
Paul said that card copies of the Autumn Programme should be available by next week’s meeting which is also our End of Season Lunch (Don’t forget that every member should bring a suitable raffle prize) You can also view the Autumn Programme here.
Phil Evans volunteered to find and organise some field trips for members
Tony Hare, website secretary suggested that to keep some continuity during the 2 1/2 month summer closure perhaps members could send in their own items for the website. This could be perhaps photos of interesting things they have done, maybe photos of Jubilee street decorations, etc. Tony Taft will shortly be providing a video he made of a famous steam engine. Don’t miss it, keep an eye on the website for Latest Posts
The retiring President Barry Ross and Chairman Roy Matthews then swapped their Chains of Office.

Photos above were taken as usual by Tony Taft. You can see the complete new Committee line-up by visiting the Meet the Committe page.
