Our speaker today was Jeremy Sackett whose talk was entitled “Brewing and Distilling: Art or Science?”
Jeremy worked for Guinness for 27 years in both London and Dublin as a Master Brewer and Production Manager and throughout his talk his extensive experience was obvious.
His talk was supported by diagrams that explained the processes used in both the brewing of beer and the distilling of spirits such as whisky. It became clear that the answer to the title question is that it is a mixture of both.
Jeremy explained the science behind the processes but also acknowledged that the skill and “art” of the brewers and tasters are always essential elements.
Our members found this both an informative and interesting presentation and this was evidenced by the number of questions at the end.
