Russian Ghost Ships Loiter in Nordic Waters

“Russian Ghost Ships” sounds like the title of a Franz Kafka play or a novel by Nikolai Gogol.

Instead, these mystery boats are very real and are sailing around the waters near Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden.

What gives them their ghoulish descriptor is that they have turned off their Automatic Identification System (AIS). Thus, while everyone knows they are out there somewhere, no one is quite sure where that somewhere is.

It is believed that Moscow is using these boats to map the locations of internet and power cables, oil pipelines, and wind farms in the Nordic waters.

The head of Denmark’s counter-espionage department and the head of Norway’s intelligence agency both say that they are ready to intervene if Russia tries anything against their countries’ infrastructure.
