Our speaker this week was Pierre Landell-Mills who is a Probus member from Dartmouth and his presentation was called “Citizens Against Corruption”.
Pierre is retired having gained vast experience around the world with the World Bank. His most recent work dealt with Economic Development and how that could be achieved despite the widespread corruption that exists in many countries.
Pierre explained that it is broadly true to say that levels of corruption are lower in wealthy countries than in poor countries and that worldwide it amounts to trillions of dollars.
Nevertheless, ordinary citizens can do a lot to fight corruption and he gave numerous examples of how this was being done even in very poor Nations.
This was an excellent and well received presentation that generated much discussion and many questions from the 22 members present.
