Peter Dijkshoon – The Afsluitdijk, “One Hundred Years and a Hydraulic Icon”

Our talk today was given Club Member Peter Dijkshoon. 20 Members attended and there wer 4 apologies.
With the aid of many photos and slides Peter described how the sea defences of Holland were constructed and maintained to protect and reclaim the low lying areas.

The Afsluitdijk is a major dam and causeway in the Netherlands. It was constructed between 1927 and 1932 and runs from Den Oever in North Holland province to the village of Zurich in Friesland province, over a length of 32 kilometres and a width of 90 metres, at an initial height above Amsterdam Ordnance Datum of between 6.7 metres along the section at Friesland, and 7.4 metres where it crosses the deep channel of the Vlieter. Speaker Biography:-
“Our speaker today attended Technical University Delft in The Netherlands for a MSC in Civil Engineering 1963-72 and went on a long career in the State Agency “Rijkswaterstaat” (DoT The Netherlands) in traffic; transport and road-projectmanagement. Leading to his appointment in 2005 as program manager in “Partners for Roads” in the New EU Member States in Eastern Europe. As a special ambassador for the Minister he contributed to the development of “Trans European Networks”.
Peter completed his expreriences by joining the Paignton Probus Club in November 2013
