This week our Club meeting heard a presentation from Professor Iain McCall whose talk was called “Scintillating Story – Miraculous Radiation “.

Our Speaker Finder Paul Young reports:-
Professor Ian McCall is an expert in the field of Nuclear medicine and Nuclear imaging.
The meeting was attended by 23 Members with 5 apologies for absence,
Iain is a Probus member in Dartmouth. His professional background is Radiology, however, he also was responsible for undertaking research in this field.
Iain’s talk focused on the work of Marie Curie and Sir Ernest Rutherford. Marie was born in Poland but educated mainly in France and Sir Ernest Rutherford was born in New Zealand but did most of his work in England. Both were awarded Noble prizes and both were giants in their respective fields of science.
This was an excellent presentation in every respect.
Tony Taft, our photographer continues:-
I can not pretend to to say that I understood all that Ian was telling us suffice to say he presented it in a way that made it entertaining.
The main theme of the talk was the brilliant research from the likes of Marie Curie, dedicating her life in developing new radioactive elements these in time have enabled us to invent ways of using this research to further nuclear medical equipment that has saved countless lives.
Marie Curie was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace prize and well deserved
This was a complicated presentation so my review is less informative than usual but I can say that all the members found the talk interesting.
Websec Tony adds this photo he took of the radiotherapy machine in Torbay Hospital after one of his 20 weekly sessions of treatment for Prostate Cancer in October 2019.
