Meeting Report 22nd November 2023

Todays attendance was 23 with 3 apologies

Our Speaker Finder Paul Young reports:-

This week our talk was presented by Barry Hayden, who is one of our Club members, and his talk was “Carbon and Climate Change – Hero or Villain”.

This talk was extremely topical with the subject of climate change almost always in the news. However, Barry focused on Carbon and whilst the subject is very important he did suggest that there are some grounds for optimism.

The talk was complex and somewhat demanding but extremely interesting and well illustrated.

Now I guessed this was going to be a complicated subject to review, Barry obviously knows a lot about the problems with our climate and the reasons why these problems exist.
The main cause for concern is the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and with the help of some complicated on screen charts Barry tried to explain what is needed, some way to trap carbon where it would stay for a long time, that is easier said than done.
Countries around the world are researching ways of achieving this goal, and although carbon is the main villain we do need some carbon in our day to day lives, like diamond rings ,sugar in our coffee, and food on our plates, the list is quite lengthy I am sure if you look on Google you could find the list.
Barry did an excellent presentation and it was clear to see he had done a lot of research.

The talk was well received by our members I didn’t hear any snoring, and a few asked questions which Barry was able to answer.

The photo of the back of the moon with Earth in the distance was taken by a Russian spacecraft and illustrates how beautiful our planet is but also how delicate it is if we destroy it what happens next.
Enjoy the photos below giving you a visual example of what’s going on around the world.
