Meeting Report 20th March 2024

Our Reporter/Photographer Tony Taft reports:
On a bright warmer day we had an attendance of 24 with 2 apologies and 3 lady guests so the room was quite full.

Before the meeting proceeded Barry Ross presented Chris Powling with his club badge we are always happy to do that.

Our speaker was one of our club members Phil Evans who is our comedian and always tells us a joke before the start of the meeting Phil very kindly stepped in at the last minute to cover for a booked speaker who had fallen I’ll, we wish him a speedy recovery and hope he can do his presentation at a later date.

The title of Phil’s presentation was musical memories the BBC radio and TV can you remember.

Phil’s started his presentation on the subject of the very first broadcasts by the BBC in this country, it all began on the 18th of October 1922 by a group of leading wireless manufacturers including Marconi.

Daily broadcasting by the BBC began in Marconi’s London studio, 2LO in the Strand on November 14th 1922.

Arthur Burrows, Director of programs at the British Broadcasting Company, launched Britain’s first national radio broadcasting service from Marconi House in the Strand London.

Phil said that the programs always started after midday on a Sunday to allow people to go to church, it was estimated that thirty thousand receivers tuned in to listen to the first programs.

The second phase of Phil’s presentation was in the form of a quiz as to who could recognise a theme tune and what show it represented, this was both radio and television.

We were then shown photos of cast members from all the shows and we had to remember their names, Ian who is one of our members came up with all the answers and even gave answers before the questions were asked ( well done Ian )

Phil tried his hardest to try and confuse Ian and it became a competition between them both but all in good fun.

This is the second time that Phil has done a presentation for us and it was so good of him to step in at the last minute, we all enjoyed the meeting and our lady guests were made to feel very welcome.
