The Chairman and Committee Members wish a ‘Warm Hello’ to all Paignton Probus Members and also, any Prospective Members.
I hope that you are all well, and are enjoying the lovely area we all live in.
The intention of this letter is to update / remind existing members, and, to help / inform anybody who might be considering joining us. To this end, I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to any person reading this who may be interested in joining our friendly band of men of the
Paignton Probus Club.
As most existing members will already know, since Jan 2022, our meetings have been held at the beautiful and Historic Building called the ‘The Paignton Club’ situated on Paignton Seafront Esplanade.
Situated at the harbour end, it enjoys lovely views over Paignton Beach, The Pier, The Green, and across the bay to Torquay beyond. (Free onsite parking available for a limited number of vehicles, not normally a problem).
We meet here on Wednesday mornings between 10.00 a.m. and around 12.30 noon all year (With the exception of a few weeks during Christmas and New Year period, and also, during the High Summer Season, when there is the option to meet up socially away from the crowds at the Old Smokey Pub Marldon from 12.30 for a drink, chat, and food if you wish, until around 14.30)
The regular meetings start with a welcome cup of coffee or tea, and a biscuit (or two), this is followed by a joke of the day, and any announcements the Chairman may wish to make. Then we have a presentation / talk from a guest speaker, this will be on various interesting subjects from: Life Onboard a Nuclear Submarine, to the History of Plymouth Sound, to Transport, etc.
Following this, it’s into the bar area for alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks, and great camaraderie with your fellow Paignton Probus members.
We have three lunch days per year, Christmas, Paignton Probus Birthday, and our End of Meetings Season Lunch (in June), where partners are encouraged to come and enjoy a lovely 2 or 3 course meal, plus, coffee, and to meet and mingle with the members and their partners. Once a year we also have a fun race evening with partners (no physical effort required) just fun, betting is on simulated horses.
Throughout the year we have optional social outings which also include partners and friends, such as: In May 2023 we had a Round Robin Trip with the Dartmouth Steam Railway, during which we travelled by steam train from Paignton to Kingswear, passenger ferry to Dartmouth, then we had free time to look around Dartmouth and have lunch. This was followed by a lovely cruise up the river Dart to Totnes, where, after ice creams & / or cream tea, we rode back to Paignton on a double-decker open top bus, it was really a fantastic day out, and one I am sure that we will be repeating.
Many great new friendships can, and are often made, however, as is normal in life, ‘it is what ‘you’ put in that will equal / be what you get out’ of being a Paignton Probus member.
*The annual membership cost, which covers between 35 – 36 regular meetings, and includes your coffee/ tea, and biscuits at the Paignton Club is £220.00 per year.
This works out at approx £5.50 per meeting (pretty good value I feel). The annual membership is due to be paid each September (unless you are a new member joining part way through the year. See below), which is at the start of our normal meetings year.
**New persons considering joining Paignton Probus can attend three (3) consecutive meetings before being asked to pay a membership fee. The exact amount they will be required to pay will be ‘a pro rata portion’ of the annual fee, the exact amount will depend on how much of the calendar period of the membership year is remaining.
Note: If, after attending (3 trial) three ‘consecutive meetings’, a person does not wish to join, then it will have cost them nothing!
Lunches, and outings (which are not mandatory) are at extra cost to the individual.
***Membership payments can be paid either; to our Treasurer (possibly at a meeting), by; Cash, Card, & / or, a Cheque (made payable to: – Paignton Probus). Alternatively, they can now be paid by BACS (See details for this method below).
