Meeting Review 5th March 2025 -The Desert War, also known as The North African Campaign of WW2 – By Mr Phillip Evans .

This was an excellent presentation by our own Military Historian Philip Evans entitled “The Desert War” this was a very important military campaign in World War2.

It started in June 1940 with the declaration of war by Italy and the Italian invasion of Egypt from Libya. In December 1940 the British Army launched a very successful raid that led to the destruction of the Italian 10th army.

With the support of the Germans the Italians were able to regroup and the war continued for 2 years with each side gaining superiority for several times, before in 1943 the British Army with the help of many Commonwealth troops operating from the East and American forces coming from the West were able to beat the Axis troops in the 2nd battle of El Alamein and forcing them to surrender to the Allied troops in May 1943.

At the end of his talk Phil had quite a lot of questions and the vote of thanks was very ably given by Paul Young.

Following this presentation from Phil Evans, our Vice Chairman Barry Ross, also our Dinner Monitor, informed the meeting that after having been cancelled for the last few years, the Annual Race Night Event is going to change and be held after a buffet lunch on the afternoon of April 10th 2025.

He asked the members to, please bring friends and family to support this event, as there has to be at least 30 people present for The Paignton Club to provide the buffet lunch and to be enough present to run The Race Day.

The chairman, Mr Colin Small, then told us that next week’s Speaker will be Ian Nightingale from the Torbay Prostate Support Association. The meeting then closed at 11.50am.
