Meeting Review 12th March 2025- Ian Nightingale and Paul Lloyd- “Torbay Prostate Support Association”

But firstly, a special notice: The Chairman opened the meeting with the sad news that our long time member Harding Jenkins has passed away following him having a had a fall.

Harding has been a member since 2017, and in February 2024 he gave us an interesting talk on his life afloat. I feel sure that you will all join me (Chris Martin) in wishing our now passed member may R.I.P.

Today’s talk was given to us by, Ian Nightingale, and Paul Lloyd, from the Torbay Prostate Support Association, and told us about the work of this Association.

Interestingly, our past member Peter Hoskins was a founder member of T P S A, and received an MBE for his work on supporting and promoting the effects of prostate cancer. You can see our report on Peter receiving the BEM by Clicking here.
Ian Nightingale was the main speaker today, and he explaining the work done by their group.

The local T.P.S.A:

Catchment area

Is Torbay, Teighbridge and the surrounding areas

Their objectives are:

•To provide support for patients of prostate cancer, potential patients, families of patients and interested carers.

•To create an awareness of prostate cancer among the general public.

•To promote and encourage the establishment of a specialist centre for the treatment of prostate cancer in Torbay.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, but the earlier you find it, the easier it is to treat.

We were told the importance of looking out for the symptoms and having early and regular PSA tests.

Ian explained that more follow up tests are becoming more available and more reliable.

From February 2025 Brixham hospital started regular times when PSA blood tests will be provided.

Ian then gave us details of the different treatments that can be provided. However, some of the newer ones are not available in our area it seems.

Advice on different treatments should be sought from a qualified consultant.

In February 2024 a dedicated urology investigations unit opened at Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre, serving Torbay and South Devon.

After the two speakers had finished, there were many questions from the members present. Also experiences both, from those suffering with, and past suffers, of prostate cancer.

Next week’s speaker will be Andrew Hamilton, the talk is entitled, The history of the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

The Chairman then closed the meeting at 11.50am.
