Meeting Report 8th May 2024

Our Speaker Finder Paul Young reports:-

Our speaker this week was Phil Evans who is a long standing member of our club. Phil has produced numerous talks in the past and his presentation this week was the latest in a highly successful series.

One of Phil’s principal interests is military history, therefore his presentation entitled, “Alanbrooke – British Soldier” fitted perfectly into that line. Our meeting this week was attended by 20 club members

Phil explained that Alan Francis Brooke was born in 1883 coming from an Anglo-Irish family in West Ulster. He became a career soldier starting out as an artillery officer. He served throughout the First World War. However, his fame lies almost entirely on his work in the Second World War. He became the most senior officer in the British army and a close personal adviser to Churchill with whom he developed a close working relationship.

Phil posed an interesting question at the end of his presentation. Why is it that Viscount Alanbrooke, the most senior army officer in the UK hardly remembered today?
